A3 | Db2 13 for z/OS - Five Key Features to Drive Performance and Innovation
Monday October 27, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm WIB
Db2 for z/OS continues to evolve with features that make database management more efficient, scalable, and responsive. Recent enhancements in Db2 for z/OS focus on making database administration more efficient, with tools and features that automate processes, improve performance, and minimize downtime.
Description:
1. Package Validity at Statement Level (FL502 & FL504)

Introduces statement-level package validation.
Valid statements in a package remain executable even when some are invalidated.Enhances performance with incremental binding, reducing the need for full package rebinding.
New catalog table SYSPACKSTMTDEP records package dependencies at the statement level.

2. SQL Data Insights (FL500)

Leverages AI and deep learning with vector-embedding models to enhance query insights.
Functions like AI_ANALOGY, AI_COMMONALITY, and AI_SIMILARITY help detect data patterns, offering cognitive intelligence directly within SQL queries.

3. Current Lock Timeout Register

New CURRENT LOCK TIMEOUT register allows setting lock timeouts at the application or SQL statement level.
Offers better control over lock waits, overriding system-wide defaults for more efficient handling of transaction concurrency.

4. Online Conversion of Tables from PBG to PBR (FL500)

Simplifies online conversion of Partitioned-by-Growth (PBG) tables to Partitioned-by-Range (PBR) tables.
Reduces performance impact with minimal downtime, using ALTER and REORG utilities for smoother conversion.

5. Deadlock Resolution Priority Variable (FL501)

Introduces DEADLOCK_RESOLUTION_PRIORITY to define thread priority for deadlock resolution.
Higher priority threads are less likely to be terminated, enhancing application stability during deadlock situations.

Tuesday October 28, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am WIB
SQL pagination or scrolling is a common technique used in many applications (such as CICS, web, mobile) that need to fetch the next n rows to be displayed on the screen. There are multiple ways to achieve this goal and many do not take advantage of the latest enhancements in recent Db2 versions. In this session we will take a look at the traditional pagination approaches and compare them to the latest possibilities. We will discover that in many cases, optimizing pagination approaches can result in performance gains.

A14 | Tools maintenance our way
Wednesday October 29, 2025 5:40pm - 6:40pm WIB
One important task for a Db2 for z/OS sysprog is to install and maintain Db2 tools. Most changes to tools are handled as continuous delivery. Before becoming a sysprog I had no idea how much time could be spent on all these tools. Getting new PTFs, installing them, verifying the changes and sometimes backing out the changes.
We have developed a way to do all this work as smooth as possible. The purpose of this session is to give an overall description of SMP/E, Tools Customizer and our process. You who has never work with tools maintenance will get an insight in the work and you who do this regularly will hopefully get new ideas on how to do it more smoothly.
As of today we only use IBM tooling, but I think this process could be applied to tools from other verdors too.

A17 | Claims, Drains and Automobiles
Thursday October 30, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm WIB
Picture a bustling metropolis: thousands of people crossing streets, driving cars, and getting to work. It would be chaos without traffic lights, police officers, or laws. In Db2 for z/OS, that metropolis is data, transactions, utilities, queries, Units of Work. Claims, Drains, Locks, and Latches are the silent traffic controllers keeping the peace.
This presentation explains these concepts using memorable, amusing, everyday illustrations, and with examples, shows why they matter.
